ASTM A517 Grade P Equivalent Materials Table

Standard

Grade / Designation

Type

Notes / Equivalence Level

ASTM

A517 Grade P

Quenched & Tempered Alloy Steel Plate

Original Grade– High-strength pressure vessel plate

ASME

SA-517 Grade P

Quenched & Tempered Alloy Steel Plate

Direct & Fully Interchangeable– Identical requirements

UNS

K21604 (series reference)

Unified Numbering System

Official designation for A517 series (Grade P specific)

ASTM (Structural)

A514 Grade P

Quenched & Tempered Alloy Steel Plate

Chemically & Mechanically Identical– Same composition and properties; A514 is for structural use, A517 for pressure vessels

EN 10028-6

P460QL1 / P460QL2 (closest)

Quenched & Tempered Fine Grain Steel

Closest European alternative; similar strength level, but chemistry and testing may require project-specific approval

EN 10025-6

S690QL / S690QL1

Quenched & Tempered Structural Steel

High yield strength (≥690 MPa) alternative when exact A517 chemistry is not mandatory

JIS

No direct equivalent

Usually supplied to ASTM/ASME specification; closest high-strength Q&T grades

GB/T (China)

Q690CF / similar high-strength Q&T

Quenched & Tempered Steel

Gangsteel can produce plates to exact A517 Gr P chemistry and properties

Important Notes on ASTM A517 Grade P

  • Maximum Thickness: Up to 4 in. (100 mm) – the thickest among A517 grades.
  • Mechanical Properties(typical quenched & tempered condition):
    • Yield Strength: min. 690 MPa (100 ksi) for ≤65 mm; slightly lower for thicker plates.
    • Tensile Strength: 795–930 MPa (115–135 ksi).
    • Elongation: min. 16%.
  • Chemical Composition Highlights(Grade P): Higher nickel (Ni 1.15–1.55%) and specific Cr-Mo-V-B alloying for excellent hardenability and toughness.
  • HIC / NACE Versions: Gangsteel can supply A517 Grade P HIC + NACE MR0175 / ISO 15156 compliant plates with enhanced cleanliness (low S, Ca-treated) for sour service applications.
  • A514 vs A517: A514 Grade P and A517 Grade P have identical chemical composition and mechanical properties. The only difference is the intended end-use (A517 for pressure vessels, A514 for structural/welded bridges).

Gangsteel maintains a large inventory of ASTM A517 Grade P plates (including HIC/NACE versions) in thicknesses from 6 mm to 150 mm, with full EN 10204 3.1 / 3.2 certification and all supplementary requirements (HIC per NACE TM0284, hardness control, ultrasonic testing, etc.).
