S460NH Steel Overview

At Gangsteel, we’re excited to introduce S460NH steel, a high-strength, low-alloy structural steel under EN 10025-5, specifically designed for pressure vessel applications with enhanced atmospheric corrosion resistance. Known for its fine-grain structure, excellent weldability, and durability in harsh environments, S460NH steel is a top choice for boilers, storage tanks, and offshore pressure vessels.

As part of the en 10025 3 normalized steel plate family, S460NH offers a minimum yield strength of 460 MPa and -20°C toughness, making it reliable for moderate climates. Gangsteel provides a detailed overview of S460NH steel’s specifications, chemical composition, mechanical properties, and applications, comparing it to grades like en 10025 3 s420n normalized structural steel plate and en 10025 3 s355n normalized structural steel plate. What is S460NH Steel?

S460NH steel is a high-strength structural steel under EN 10025-5, with a minimum yield strength of 460 MPa for plates up to 16 mm thick. Its designation breaks down as:

  • S: Structural steel.
  • 460: Minimum yield strength in MPa.
  • NH: Normalized or normalized rolled, tested for impact toughness at -20°C, with enhanced atmospheric corrosion resistance.

The normalization process refines the grain structure, enhancing S460NH steel’s strength, toughness, and weldability, while alloying elements like copper provide corrosion protection. Compared to en 10025 3 s355n normalized structural steel plate, S460NH offers higher strength and corrosion resistance for pressure vessel demands.

Key Elements:

  • Low Carbon: 0.20% max ensures clean welds and toughness.
  • Manganese: 1.00-1.70% boosts strength for heavy structures.
  • Copper: 0.55% enhances atmospheric corrosion resistance, a key S460NH feature.
  • Aluminum & Niobium: Refine grains for toughness.
  • Low Sulfur & Phosphorus: Minimize inclusions for superior weld quality.

The Carbon Equivalent (CEV) is capped at 0.48% for plates up to 63 mm, calculated as CEV = C + Mn/6 + (Cr + Mo + V)/5 + (Ni + Cu)/15, ensuring weldability, similar to en 10025 3 s420n normalized structural steel plate.
