S420MC Material Specification

As a premier exporter and manufacturer of high-quality structural steel plates, Gangsteel specializes in producing EN 10149-2 compliant materials, including the versatile S420MC steel grade.

S420MC is a thermomechanically rolled fine-grain high-strength low-alloy (HSLA) steel designed for cold forming, offering excellent strength, ductility, and weldability.

Ideal for automotive components, machinery parts, and light structural elements, our S420MC plates are delivered in thermomechanically rolled (+M) condition to ensure superior formability and performance.

What is S420MC Material?

S420MC material, designated as 1.0980 under the European standard EN 10149-2, is part of the family of hot-rolled high-yield strength steels for cold forming. The "S" denotes structural steel, "420" indicates a minimum yield strength of 420 MPa, and "MC" specifies thermomechanical rolling for enhanced cold formability. This grade is optimized for applications where bending, pressing, or deep drawing is required without sacrificing strength, distinguishing it from normalized grades like S420N (EN 10025-3).

EN 10149-2 S420MC is produced through controlled thermomechanical rolling, which combines hot rolling with accelerated cooling to achieve a fine-grain microstructure, improving ductility and reducing the need for heat treatment. Gangsteel produces S420MC plates in thicknesses up to 20 mm, with precise microalloying for optimal grain refinement and performance.

Chemical Composition of S420MC Material

The chemical composition of S420MC is tightly controlled to ensure low carbon equivalent for weldability and microalloying for strength (ladle analysis, max % unless noted).

Heat Treatment Guide for S420MC Material

S420MC is supplied in thermomechanically rolled (+M) condition, combining controlled rolling with accelerated cooling for fine-grain structure.

  • Welding Preheating: Not required for ≤20 mm; 100–150°C for thicker (CEV ≤0.43).
  • PWHT: Avoid; may degrade properties.
  • Hot Forming: Not recommended; cold forming is primary.
  • Annealing: If needed, stress-relief at <550°C to preserve strength.

Follow EN 1011-2 for welding. Gangsteel optimizes for cold forming.

Applications of S420MC Material

  • Automotive: Chassis, reinforcements.
  • Machinery: Frames, brackets.
  • Agriculture: Implements.
  • Construction: Light profiles.
