GTAW (TIG) is preferred for precision and low heat input, ideal for thin plates like plat SS 304 3mm, using ER308H fillers to match composition.
Use low heat input (<2.0 kJ/mm), interpass temperature ≤300°F (149°C), and post-weld annealing (1870-2050°F) to prevent carbide precipitation.
ER308H or ER308 fillers are ideal, matching the high-carbon content; ER321 for titanium stabilization in high-temperature welds.
304H’s higher carbon (0.04-0.10%) risks sensitization, requiring annealing, while 304L (≤0.03%) welds with minimal risk.
