What is SA 240 GR 304L Stainless Steel?

SA 240 GR 304L, specified under ASME SA 240, is an austenitic stainless steel with low carbon (≤0.03%) for enhanced weldability compared to SA 240 GR 304. With a SA 240 GR 304L density of 8.00 g/cm³ and SS 304 non magnetic properties in its annealed state, it’s widely used in food processing, chemical equipment, and architectural applications. Its corrosion resistance is driven by 18-20% chromium and 8-12% nickel, as detailed in our SS 304 data sheet.

Does SA 240 GR 304L Tarnish?

Tarnishing refers to surface discoloration or dulling, often due to oxidation or chemical reactions. Unlike metals like silver or copper, SA 240 GR 304L stainless steel does not tarnish under normal conditions. Its high chromium content forms a passive oxide layer that protects against rust and discoloration in most environments. This makes SA 240 GR 304L, like plat stainless 304, highly resistant to tarnishing in applications such as kitchen equipment or decorative panels.

However, certain conditions can cause surface changes that may resemble tarnishing:

  • Mild Staining: Exposure to harsh chemicals, chlorides, or salt water can cause pitting or staining, especially if the protective oxide layer is damaged.
  • Heat Tint: Welding without proper shielding gas may lead to discoloration (heat tint), which can be mistaken for tarnishing. This is less common with SA 240 GR 304L compared to SA 240 GR 304H material due to its low carbon content.
  • Surface Contamination: Dirt, grease, or fingerprints on plat SS 304 3mm or other finishes can mimic tarnish but are removable with cleaning.

Gangsteel’s sa 240 gr 304l plates are designed to maintain their appearance in standard conditions.

Corrosion Resistance of SA 240 GR 304L

The corrosion resistance of SA 240 GR 304L is excellent in atmospheric, freshwater, and mild acid environments, preventing tarnish-like effects. Key points:

  • Atmospheric Conditions: Resists rust and discoloration in humid or urban environments, unlike SS204 vs SS 304, which has lower corrosion resistance.
  • Food and Beverage: Safe for contact with food, maintaining its shine in hygienic applications.
  • Limitations: In chloride-rich environments (e.g., coastal areas), pitting may occur, though less severely than with SA 240 GR 304. For such cases, consider our sa 240 gr 316l for better pitting resistance.

Compared to SA 240 GR 304H material, 304L’s low carbon reduces sensitization during welding, further preventing corrosion-related discoloration. Our sa 240 gr 304 offers slightly higher strength but less weldability.

How to Prevent Surface Discoloration

To keep SA 240 GR 304L looking pristine and avoid any tarnish-like effects:

  • Regular Cleaning: Use mild soap and water or stainless steel cleaners on plate 2 mm SUS 304 or thicker plates. Avoid abrasive pads that may scratch the surface.
  • Passivation: Treat with nitric acid solutions to restore the oxide layer, especially after fabrication.
  • Avoid Chlorides: Rinse off salt or chemical residues promptly, especially in marine environments.
  • Proper Welding: Use low-carbon fillers (e.g., 308L) and adequate shielding gas to prevent heat tint on SA 240 TP 304/304L welds.

Gangsteel provides guidance on maintaining our astm a 240 stainless plate products to ensure longevity.

Applications Where Tarnish Resistance Matters

SA 240 GR 304L’s resistance to tarnishing makes it ideal for:

  • Architectural Panels: Maintains a polished look in building facades.
  • Kitchen Equipment: Resists staining from food acids, ensuring hygiene and aesthetics.
  • Medical Devices: Leverages SS 304 non magnetic properties and cleanability.
  • Chemical Tanks: Withstands mild corrosives without discoloration.

Our competitive SS 304 plate price makes SA 240 GR 304L a cost-effective choice. Explore our sa 240 gr 317l for harsher environments.

Comparing SA 240 GR 304L with Other Grades

  • Vs. SA 240 GR 304: Similar corrosion resistance but 304L is better for welding, reducing discoloration risks.
  • Vs. SA 240 GR 316: 316 offers superior resistance to chlorides but at a higher SS 304 steel price.
  • Vs. 200 Series: SA 240 GR 304L outperforms 304 vs 200 grades in tarnish resistance and durability.

For high-temperature applications, consider our sa 240 gr 304h or sa 240 gr 321.
