What is 430 stainless?

430 stainless(full name: AISI 430 stainless steel, also written as Type 430, UNS S43000, SUS 430, EN 1.4016 / X6Cr17, or simply 430 grade stainless) is one of the most popular, affordable, and widely used stainless steel grades in the world.

It is a ferritic stainless steel (magnetic, body-centered cubic structure) with the following key characteristics:

Main Composition & What It Means

Element

Typical Content (wt%)

Role / Why It Matters

Chromium (Cr)

16.0 – 18.0%

Main alloying element → forms protective passive oxide layer (good rust resistance in mild environments)

Carbon (C)

≤ 0.12%

Kept low → prevents excessive carbide formation and improves weldability

Manganese (Mn)

≤ 1.00%

Standard deoxidizer

Silicon (Si)

≤ 1.00%

Improves oxidation resistance

Phosphorus (P)

≤ 0.040%

Controlled impurity

Sulfur (S)

≤ 0.030%

Controlled impurity

Nickel (Ni)

≤ 0.75%(usually < 0.50% or trace)

Intentionally very low or zero→ keeps cost low & stable, makes it fully magnetic

Iron (Fe)

Balance

Base metal

Important fact:430 is nickel-free (or ultra-low nickel) by design — unlike 304/316 (8–14% Ni) or 201 (3.5–5.5% Ni). This is its biggest commercial advantage.

Key Properties of 430 Stainless Steel

304 is non-magnetic

Corrosion resistance

Good in mild atmospheres, fresh water, mild acids

Moderate – lower than 304 in chlorides

Thermal conductivity

≈ 26 W/m·K

Much higher (≈60% better than 304)

Thermal expansion

10.5 × 10⁻⁶/°C

Lower (≈35% less than 304)

Maximum service temp

815 °C intermittent

Good oxidation resistance

Formability / deep drawing

Excellent

Very good

Weldability

Good (with care)

Very good

Cost

30–50% lower

Much cheaper

Price stability

Very stable

No nickel volatility

Most Common Real-World Uses of 430 Stainless Steel

430 is the highest-volume 400-series grade because it offers the best balance of performance and price for mild to moderate applications:

  • Home appliances— refrigerator doors, washing machine panels, range hoods, microwave interiors
  • Kitchenware— sinks, countertops, pots/pans (especially induction bases), utensils
  • Architectural— elevator interiors, wall cladding, decorative trim
  • Automotive— interior trim, exhaust trim, wheel covers
  • Furniture & hardware— cabinet fronts, handles, table frames
  • Electrical— enclosures, brackets, heat shields
  • Food equipment— mild-contact surfaces (dry foods, dairy, non-acidic processing)

Quick Summary – What “430 stainless” Really Means in Practice

When someone says “430 stainless steel,” they usually mean:

  • A low-cost, magnetic stainless steel
  • Good rust resistancein normal indoor/mild outdoor conditions
  • Excellent heat transferand low warping
  • Easy to form, stamp, and fabricate
  • Not suitablefor marine, heavy chloride, or strong acid environments
  • The go-to grade for high-volume, non-critical applications (appliances, trim, kitchenware, decorative panels)

Bottom line: 430 is very good quality and extremely popular — not the highest corrosion resistance, but outstanding value, thermal performance, and formability for most everyday uses.
