Is 430 stainless steel food grade?

Yes — 430 stainless steel is widely accepted and used as food gradefor a large number of food-contact applications, especially in mild, non-aggressive environments.

Gangsteel supplies genuine Yongjin Mill 430 stainless steel (AISI 430 / UNS S43000 / SUS430 / 1.4016 / X6Cr17) every day to food equipment manufacturers, commercial kitchen fabricators, and appliance producers worldwide. We have seen excellent real-world results from 430 in food-grade use for many years.

Official Regulatory Acceptance

  • United States (FDA)— 430 is listed in FDA 21 CFR 174–178 as generally recognized as safe (GRAS) for food-contact surfaces when used appropriately. It is commonly accepted for dry foods, dairy, mild beverages, and non-acidic processing.
  • European Union— Compliant with Regulation (EC) No 1935/2004 and Regulation (EU) No 10/2011 for many food-contact applications (migration limits are met with smooth 2B or BA finish).
  • China (GB 4806 series)— Accepted for food-contact equipment under national standards when the surface is smooth and properly maintained.
  • NSF/ANSI 51— Many 430 2B and BA products are certified for food-zone use in commercial equipment (sinks, tables, hoods, etc.).

Important note: Food-grade approval depends on:

  • Surface finish (smooth 2B or BA is best; rough or damaged surfaces are not)
  • Specific food environment (mild vs. high-chloride/strong-acid)
  • Cleaning/sanitizing practices (regular, proper hygiene)

When 430 Is Excellent Food Grade Material

430 performs reliably as food grade in:

  • Refrigerator and freezer liners, shelves, and interior panels
  • Commercial kitchen worktables, countertops, and prep surfaces
  • Range hoods, ventilation ducts, and backsplashes
  • Bakery trays, mixing bowls, and utensils
  • Food processing conveyor guards and non-direct-contact parts
  • Dairy equipment and mild storage tanks

The 16–18% chromium forms a stable passive layer that resists rust and staining from water, steam, cooking oils, dairy, mild acids (vinegar, lemon juice, tomato sauce in normal cooking), and common sanitizers.

The 2B or BA finish creates a smooth surface that is easy to sanitize and does not harbor bacteria when cleaned properly.

When 430 Is NOT Recommended as Food Grade

430 is not the best choice in these situations (we always recommend 304 or 316 instead):

  • High-chloride foods (brines, salted meats, soy sauce, pickled foods at high concentration) → pitting risk
  • Strong acids (tomato-based sauces, vinegar, citrus at prolonged high heat) → surface etching or staining possible
  • Heavy use of chlorine-based sanitizers or aggressive cleaners → can damage the passive layer over time
  • Very high-temperature acidic cooking (e.g., commercial tomato sauce reduction) → 304 or 316L is better

In these cases, 304 or 316L is the safer long-term choice due to higher pitting resistance (PREN value: 430 ≈ 17; 304 ≈ 19; 316 ≈ 25).

Real-World Performance in Food Equipment

From our export records and customer feedback:

  • Commercial kitchen manufacturers in Europe and North America use 430 2B for worktables, sinks, and hoods — excellent hygiene and durability with regular cleaning.
  • Refrigerator and freezer producers worldwide rely on 430 BA liners and panels — hygienic, cost-effective, and durable.
  • Bakery and pastry equipment makers choose 430 2B trays and bowls — even heating, easy cleaning, and no flavor transfer.

These results come from genuine Yongjin Mill material supplied by Gangsteel.

How to Maximize Food-Grade Performance of 430

  • Use 2B or BA finish — smooth surfaces are easiest to sanitize.
  • Clean daily with mild, pH-neutral detergents (avoid chlorine/bleach on prolonged contact).
  • Rinse and dry thoroughly after cleaning.
  • Avoid standing water or prolonged exposure to salt/acid.
  • For critical food contact, request migration test reports (we provide them).
