JIS G3118 SGV450 steel plate, also written as JIS G 3118 SGV450, G3118 SGV450 and SGV450 pressure vessel steel plate, is a hot-rolled carbon steel plate for pressure vessels mainly intended for intermediate and moderate temperature service under JIS G 3118:2024. It belongs to the 450 MPa tensile strength class with a minimum yield point of 245 MPa. Gangsteel (HENAN GANG IRON AND STEEL) produces and exports SGV450 plate cut to size with EN 10204 3.1/3.2 certificates for boiler and pressure vessel fabricators.
Data source: JIS G 3118:2024 Carbon steel plates for pressure vessels for intermediate and moderate temperature services (revised 2024-11-20, replaces JIS G 3118:2020; JIS mark transition for 2020 until 2025-11-19), prepared based on ISO 9328-1:2018 and ISO 9328-2:2018 (MOD). The current edition covers three grades: SGV410, SGV450, SGV480. Chemical and mechanical values below follow published tables for JIS G 3118-2024 (H2ABC material cards). Always confirm the edition named on the purchase order.
| Thickness t (mm) | C max | Si | Mn | P max | S max |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 6 ≤ t ≤ 12.5 | 0.24 | 0.15–0.40 | 0.85–1.20 | 0.020 | 0.020 |
| 12.5 < t ≤ 50 | 0.26 | 0.15–0.40 | 0.85–1.20 | 0.020 | 0.020 |
| 50 < t ≤ 100 | 0.28 | 0.15–0.40 | 0.85–1.20 | 0.020 | 0.020 |
| 100 < t ≤ 200 | 0.29 | 0.15–0.40 | 0.85–1.20 | 0.020 | 0.020 |
The Mn upper limit may be increased by 0.06% for every 0.01% decrease in the C upper limit, but Mn must not exceed 1.60%. For plates thinner than 12.5 mm, Mn may be in the range 0.60% to 0.90% where the standard permits. Additional alloying elements not listed may be added as necessary. Product analysis tolerances follow the normative references in JIS G 3118:2024 (including JIS G 0321).
| Thickness t (mm) | Tensile strength Rm (MPa) | Yield point YS min (MPa) | Elongation min (%) |
|---|---|---|---|
| 6 < t ≤ 40 | 450–540 | 245 | ≥ 19 (No. 1A) |
| 40 < t ≤ 50 | 450–540 | 245 | ≥ 19 (No. 1A) / ≥ 23 (No. 10) |
| 50 < t ≤ 200 | 450–540 | 245 | ≥ 23 (No. 10) |
Yield point and tensile strength apply across the listed thickness bands. Elongation depends on the tensile specimen type (No. 1A or No. 10) specified in the standard. Gangsteel reports the ordered specimen type and the measured values on the mill certificate.
JIS G 3118:2024 includes weldability requirements in Clause 7, covering carbon equivalent and weld-crack sensitivity composition when required by the purchase order. Austenitic grain size is addressed in Clause 9. When the buyer specifies Ceq or Pcm limits, Gangsteel calculates and reports them from the heat analysis on the certificate.
| Item | Requirement |
|---|---|

| Typical published thickness | Over 6 mm up to 200 mm (confirm Clause 4 for the ordered grade) |
| Delivery / heat treatment | Per Clause 5 of JIS G 3118:2024 and the purchase order (as-rolled, normalized or agreed) |
| Tests | Heat analysis; tensile (and agreed weldability, grain size, NDT or impact extras) |
| Certificate | EN 10204 3.1 standard; 3.2 with SGS/BV/TUV on request |
Each heat is analysed and each batch is tensile tested as required by the standard. Surfaces must be free of injurious defects. Gangsteel supplies SGV450 as cut plate and can arrange third-party witness inspection.
SGV450 is the mid-strength 450 MPa tensile class for intermediate and moderate temperature pressure vessels, boilers and petrochemical equipment when a higher design stress than SGV410 is required without moving to the 480 MPa class. Fabricators typically cut, form and weld the plate under the applicable pressure vessel or boiler code named on the design drawing.
| Standard | Comparable grade (approximate) |
|---|---|
| JIS G 3118 | SGV450 |
| Foreign / related | JIS G 3103 SB450; ASTM A516 Grade 65 / A515 Grade 65; ISO PT450GH (approximate) |
| Other JIS G 3118 grades | SGV410 | SGV480 |
| Related pressure / boiler | GB/T 713 | ASTM A516 | ASTM A537 | EN 10120 | GB 6653 |
Equivalents are engineering references only; thickness range, chemistry limits and test rules differ, so dual certification requires the stricter combined limits on the order and the mill certificate.
SGV450 is a hot-rolled carbon steel grade in JIS G 3118:2024, the Japanese Industrial Standard for carbon steel plates for pressure vessels mainly intended for intermediate and ordinary (moderate) temperature service. The letters SGV identify the product family and 450 is the nominal tensile strength class in MPa.
The current edition is JIS G 3118:2024, revised and published on 20 November 2024 by the Minister of Economy, Trade and Industry based on a draft from the Japan Iron and Steel Federation. It replaces JIS G 3118:2020; the 2020 edition may still be used for JIS mark certification until 19 November 2025. The standard is based on ISO 9328-1:2018 and ISO 9328-2:2018 with modifications (MOD).
JIS G 3118:2024 contains three grades only: SGV410, SGV450 and SGV480. No additional grades were added in the 2024 revision relative to the long-standing three-grade set.
For SGV450 plates 6 to 12.5 mm thick the heat analysis is C 0.24% max, Si 0.15–0.40%, Mn 0.85–1.20%, P 0.020% max and S 0.020% max. Carbon max rises with thickness (12.5 < t ≤ 50 mm: C ≤ 0.26%; 50 < t ≤ 100 mm: C ≤ 0.28%; 100 < t ≤ 200 mm: C ≤ 0.29%). The Mn upper limit may be raised by 0.06% for every 0.01% decrease in the C upper limit, but Mn must not exceed 1.60%. Additional alloying elements may be added when necessary.
SGV450 must reach a minimum yield point of 245 MPa and a tensile strength of 450–540 MPa. Minimum elongation is 19% on No. 1A specimens for thickness up to 50 mm and 23% on No. 10 specimens for thicker plate, as set out in the mechanical properties table.
Published property tables for SGV450 cover hot-rolled plate from just over 6 mm up to 200 mm thick. Exact applicable thickness for each grade symbol is defined in Clause 4 of JIS G 3118:2024; confirm the ordered thickness against the purchase specification.
SGV450 is supplied as hot-rolled carbon steel plate. Heat-treatment condition and its marking symbols follow Clause 5 of JIS G 3118:2024 (as-rolled, normalized or other agreed conditions). Gangsteel supplies the delivery condition named on the purchase order and shows it on the mill certificate.
Nearest engineering comparisons for SGV450 are JIS G 3103 SB450; ASTM A516 Grade 65 / A515 Grade 65; ISO PT450GH (approximate). These are approximate only because chemistry bands, thickness rules and test methods differ, so the order and mill certificate should name JIS G 3118 SGV450.
SGV450 is the mid-strength 450 MPa tensile class for intermediate and moderate temperature pressure vessels, boilers and petrochemical equipment when a higher design stress than SGV410 is required without moving to the 480 MPa class.
State the standard number JIS G 3118:2024, the grade SGV450, the heat-treatment condition, the size and tolerance, the quantity, and any optional tests such as carbon equivalent, weld-crack sensitivity composition, impact or ultrasonic examination. Example: 40 t plate 25 x 2000 x 6000 mm, JIS G 3118:2024 SGV450, normalized, EN 10204 3.1.
Gangsteel supplies JIS G 3118 SGV450 with a mill certificate to EN 10204 3.1 showing heat analysis, tensile results and any agreed additional tests, and 3.2 certificates with SGS, BV or TUV witness are available on request.
