Stainless steel 304 is an austenitic alloy, known for its corrosion resistance and used in applications like sa 240 gr 304 plate for tanks or sa 240 gr 304 pipe for systems. A common question is whether a magnet sticks to it. The short answer is no, a magnet does not stick to stainless steel 304 in its standard form.
This is because 304 has a face-centered cubic crystal structure that makes it ss 304 non magnetic. However, factors like cold working or welding can induce slight magnetism by forming martensite, a magnetic phase. For materials like sa-240 304l material or sa 240 304l material, the non-magnetic property is even more consistent due to low carbon.
To test if stainless steel 304 is magnetic, use a strong neodymium magnet. Clean the surface and place the magnet on it. If it doesn't stick or only weakly attracts, it's non-magnetic austenitic steel like 304. For sa240 304l material or sa240 304 stainless, the magnet won't adhere firmly. This test is useful for identifying grades, as ferritic steels like 430 are magnetic. Note that ss 304 plate density is 7.93 g/cm³, but density doesn't affect magnetism—it's the microstructure.
Stainless steel 304's composition—18-20% chromium and 8-10.5% nickel—stabilizes the austenitic phase, which is non-magnetic. In contrast, ferritic or martensitic steels lack sufficient nickel and are magnetic. However, processes like drawing or bending can create martensite in 304, making it slightly magnetic. For sa 240 type 304 304l or sa 240 304h material, magnetism indicates processing history, not quality. Sa 182 f304 material forgings may show similar behavior.
In annealed materiale sa 240 304, no magnetism occurs. But cold working (e.g., in sa-240-304 material) can transform up to 20% to martensite, causing weak magnetism. Welding in sa240 304l material or sa 240 gr 304 plate may also induce it in the heat-affected zone. For sa 240 gr 304 means general use, slight magnetism is normal but doesn't affect performance like sa 240 304l density (7.93 g/cm³).
Non-magnetic 304 is preferred for MRI rooms, electronics, or sa 240 304 material in sensitive equipment to avoid interference. Magnetic steels are used where magnetism is beneficial, like in motors. In sa 240 tp 304/304l piping or sa 240 gr 304/304l tanks, non-magnetic properties ensure compatibility. Gangsteel’s 304 is fully non-magnetic in annealed form for sa 240 gr 304 pipe applications.
If the magnet test is inconclusive, use a permeability meter for precise measurement (austenitic like sa240-304 material has low permeability ~1.02). Chemical tests or spark analysis can confirm the grade. For sa240 tp 304 or sa240 ss 304, consult data sheets for ss 304 data sheet details.
Ss sheet 304 price, ss 304 steel price, ss 304 sheet price, and ss 304 plate price range $1,820-$3,584/MT. 304 ss plate price is similar. Gangsteel offers competitive rates for sa240-304 material and sa240-304 a240-304.
Ss204 vs ss 304: 304 has better corrosion due to nickel; 204 is cheaper.
Sa-240 type 304vs 316: 304 for general, 316 for chlorides.
