A 240 304H Stainless Steel Temperature Limits:

At Gangsteel, a leading manufacturer and exporter of stainless steel products, we supply premium A 240 304H stainless steel plates compliant with ASTM A240 and ASME SA 240 standards. A 240 304H, also known as AISI 304H, UNS S30409, or 1.4948, is a high-carbon austenitic stainless steel variant of 304, optimized for elevated-temperature service with enhanced creep and rupture strength.

This article details the A 240 304H stainless steel temperature limits, including maximum service temperatures, sensitization range, and influencing factors, for applications like boilers, heat exchangers, and high-temperature piping. Overview of A 240 304H Stainless Steel Temperature Limits

A 240 304Hstainless steel is designed for continuous service up to 1500°F (815°C), where it maintains structural integrity without excessive creep or scaling. Its high carbon content (0.04-0.10%) enhances performance at temperatures above 800°F (427°C) compared to standard 304 or 304L. Temperature limits are governed by ASTM A240 and ASME BPVC Section II, Part D, focusing on allowable stress, oxidation, and sensitization. Key limits include:

  • Continuous Service Temperature: Up to 1500°F (815°C) – Recommended for long-term exposure in pressure vessels and boilers.
  • Intermittent Service Temperature: Up to 1600°F (871°C) – For short-term or cyclic exposure (e.g., startup/shutdown).
  • Onset of Scaling/Oxidation: Begins at ~1200°F (649°C), accelerating above 1500°F.
  • Sensitization Range: Avoid prolonged exposure to 797°F-1580°F (425°C-860°C) to prevent chromium carbide precipitation, which can reduce corrosion resistance.

These limits ensure A 240 304H stainless steel performs reliably in high-temperature environments, with allowable stress of 25.5 ksi at 1000°F (538°C).

Factors Influencing Temperature Limits

  • Carbon Content: 0.04-0.10% boosts creep resistance above 800°F but increases sensitization risk in the 797°F-1580°F range.
  • Alloying: No molybdenum (unlike 316H), limiting chloride resistance but optimizing for oxidation.
  • Heat Treatment: Annealing at 1870-2100°F (1020-1149°C) followed by rapid cooling restores properties and minimizes sensitization.
  • Comparison:
    • vs. 304/304L: A 240 304H extends continuous limit to 1500°F (vs. ~800°F for 304L).
    • vs. 316H: Similar range, but 316H better for chlorides; 304H excels in non-chloride high heat.

Applications of A 240 304H Stainless Steel

A 240 304Hstainless steel is used in:

  • Boilers and Pressure Vessels: High-temperature components like steam drums.
  • Heat Exchangers: Creep-resistant tubes and shells.
  • Power Generation: Superheaters and reheaters up to 1500°F.
  • Chemical Processing: Vessels for mild corrosives at heat.
  • Piping: SA 240 GR 304H pipe for high-temperature systems.

For milder environments, consider sa 240 gr 304 or sa 240 gr 304l.

Pricing and Availability at Gangsteel

As of October 18, 2025, A 240 304H stainless steel plate prices (2B finish, 3-6mm) range from $1.60-$3.50/kg globally, slightly higher than 304 ($1.55-$3.50/kg) due to specialized use. Gangsteel offers competitive pricing at $1.60/kg FOB (MOQ 1 ton) for standard sizes (e.g., 4’x8’, 5’x10’) and custom cuts like plate 2 mm SUS 304, with finishes like 2B, No.1, and polished.
