EN 10025-3 S420N and S420NL: High-Strength Normalized Steels

As a premier exporter and manufacturer of high-quality structural steel plates, Gangsteel specializes in producing EN 10025-3 S420N and S420NL.

EN 10025-3 S420N and S420NLare high-strength, low-alloy (HSLA), fine-grain normalized structural steels with 420 MPa minimum yield strength.

They differ only in impact toughness temperature:

  • S420N: 40 J at -20°C
  • S420NL: 27 J at -50°C

Both are ideal for heavy welded constructions such as bridges, offshore platforms, cranes, high-rise buildings, and pressure vessels.

Our S420N and S420NL plates are delivered in normalized (+N) condition.

Summary

EN 10025-3 S420N and S420NLare identical high-strength normalized steels with 420 MPa yield and 520–680 MPa tensile. Only difference:

  • S420N: 40 J at -20°C
  • S420NL: 27 J at -50°C

FAQ

What is the difference between S420N and S420NL?

Only impact toughness:

  • S420N: 40 J at -20°C
  • S420NL: 27 J at -50°C

All other specs (strength, chemistry) are the same.

Are S420N and S420NL chemically identical?

Yessame composition, same CEV ≤ 0.48, same alloying.

When to use S420N vs S420NL?

  • S420N: -20°C exposure (bridges, cranes)
  • S420NL: -50°C exposure (offshore, arctic)

Can S420N replace S420NL?

No— if -50°C is required, S420NL must be used.

What is the ASTM equivalent?

A572 Gr. 65(normalized). Specify -50°C impact for S420NL.
