  • Melting Point: 1400-1450°C.
  • Thermal Conductivity: 16.2 W/m·K at 100°C.
  • Coefficient of Thermal Expansion: 17.2 × 10⁻⁶/K (20-100°C).
  • Electrical Resistivity: 0.72 × 10⁻⁶ Ω·m.
  • Modulus of Elasticity: 193 GPa.
  • Max Service Temperature: Continuous 1500°F (815°C); intermittent 1600°F (871°C).

Corrosion Resistance

304H stainless steelresists mild acids, freshwater, and atmospheric conditions, outperforming SS204 vs SS 304. Higher carbon risks sensitization in welds; anneal for protection. Less chloride-resistant than SA 240 GR 316L. See sa240 gr 316l.

Weldability

Fair with ER308H fillers; low heat input (<2.0 kJ/mm) and post-weld annealing (1870-2050°F) required to avoid sensitization. See sa240 gr 304l for low-carbon variant.

Heat Treatment

  • Annealing: 1870-2100°F (1020-1149°C) followed by rapid cooling.
  • Purpose: Dissolves carbides, restores corrosion resistance.

Applications

304H stainless steelis used in:

  • Boilers and pressure vessels.
  • Heat exchangers.
  • Superheaters and reheaters in power plants.
  • High-temperature chemical processing equipment.

For cost-effective options, see sa240 gr 201.
