SA 240 GR 304H Material: Specifications and Applications

At Gangsteel, a leading supplier of stainless steel products, we offer premium SA 240 GR 304H plates compliant with ASME SA 240 and ASTM A240 standards. Known as AISI 304H or UNS S30409, this high-carbon austenitic stainless steel excels in high-temperature environments. This guide covers the specifications and applications of SA 240 GR 304H material. Contact us at admin@gangsteel.com or visit our ASME SA 240 stainless steel plate page for details.

What is SA 240 GR 304H Material?

SA 240 GR 304His a high-carbon (0.04-0.10%) stainless steel specified under ASME SA 240 for plates used in pressure vessels and high-temperature service. It offers superior creep resistance up to 1500°F (815°C) compared to 304 or 304L. Non-magnetic in the annealed state, it’s ideal for demanding applications. See our sa 240 gr 304h page.

Chemical Composition

The composition of SA 240 GR 304H ensures high-temperature strength:

Element

Range (%)

Carbon (C)

0.04 - 0.10

Chromium (Cr)

18.00 - 20.00

Nickel (Ni)

8.00 - 10.50

Iron (Fe)

Balance

Higher carbon enhances creep resistance. Chromium and nickel provide corrosion resistance. For comparisons, see sa 240 gr 304.

Mechanical Properties

SA 240 GR 304Hsupports high-temperature structural use:

Property

Value (Min)

Tensile Strength

515 MPa (75 ksi)

Yield Strength

205 MPa (30 ksi)

Elongation (50 mm)

40%

Hardness (Brinell)

≤ 201 HB

Stronger than 304L at elevated temperatures. See sa 240 gr 304l.

Physical Properties

Key physical properties include:

  • Density: 8.00 g/cm³
  • Melting Point: ~1400-1450°C
  • Thermal Conductivity: 16.2 W/m·K
  • Max Service Temperature: 1500°F (815°C)

These support lightweight, high-heat designs. For chloride environments, explore sa 240 gr 316l.

Corrosion Resistance

SA 240 GR 304Hresists corrosion in mild acids and atmospheric conditions. It’s less effective against chlorides compared to 316L. Higher carbon may reduce weld zone corrosion resistance without annealing.

Weldability

Weldability is fair with ER308H fillers. Higher carbon (0.04-0.10%) risks sensitization, requiring controlled heat or annealing. For better weldability, see sa 240 gr 321.

Applications

SA 240 GR 304His used in:

  • Boilers and pressure vessels
  • Heat exchangers
  • Power generation (superheaters)
  • Chemical processing
  • High-temperature piping
