Overview of SA 249 TP 304 Material

SA 249 TP 304 is an austenitic stainless steel grade specified under ASME SA 249, which covers welded austenitic steel tubes for high-temperature and general corrosive service. Equivalent to ASTM A249 TP 304 and 1.4301, it’s similar to SA 240 GR 304 (used for plates) but designed for tubular products like SA 240 GR 304 pipe. Known for its SS 304 non magnetic properties and a density of 8.00 g/cm³, SA 249 TP 304 is widely used in applications requiring corrosion resistance and weldability. Gangsteel supplies related products like sa 240 gr 304 plates and can source SA 249 TP 304 tubes upon request.

Chemical Composition of SA 249 TP 304

The chemical composition of SA 249 TP 304, as per ASME SA 249, ensures excellent corrosion resistance and formability:

Element

Range (%)

Carbon (C)

0.00 - 0.08

Manganese (Mn)

0.00 - 2.00

Silicon (Si)

0.00 - 1.00

Phosphorus (P)

0.00 - 0.045

Sulfur (S)

0.00 - 0.030

Chromium (Cr)

18.00 - 20.00

Nickel (Ni)

8.00 - 11.00

Iron (Fe)

Balance

  • Chromium (Cr): Provides corrosion resistance via a passive oxide layer.
  • Nickel (Ni): Enhances ductility and corrosion resistance.
  • Carbon (C): Limited to ≤0.08% for weldability, though SA 249 TP 304L (≤0.035%) is preferred for critical welds to avoid sensitization.

For comparison, SA 249 TP 304L and SA 240 GR 304L have lower carbon for enhanced weldability. See our sa 240 gr 304l for plate equivalents.

Mechanical Properties of SA 249 TP 304

Physical Properties

  • Density: 8.00 g/cm³, matching SA 240 GR 304 density, ideal for lightweight tubing.
  • Melting Point: ~1400-1450°C, suitable for high-temperature applications.
  • Thermal Conductivity: 16.2 W/m·K, moderate for heat exchangers.
  • Coefficient of Thermal Expansion: 17.2 × 10⁻⁶/K, stable across temperatures.
  • Electrical Resistivity: 0.72 × 10⁻⁶ Ω·m, good for non-conductive uses.

Its SS 304 non magnetic properties make it suitable for sensitive equipment.

Corrosion Resistance and Weldability

SA 249 TP 304 offers excellent corrosion resistance in:

  • Atmospheric conditions and freshwater, ideal for food processing.
  • Mild acids (e.g., citric, acetic), making it food-grade.
  • General environments, outperforming SS204 vs SS 304.

However, it’s less resistant to chloride-induced pitting compared to SA 249 TP 316L. Weldability is good with ER308 filler, but SA 249 TP 304L is preferred for critical welds to minimize sensitization. For chloride-heavy environments, explore our sa 240 gr 316l plate equivalents or asme sa 312/sa 312m stainless pipe.

Applications of SA 249 TP 304

SA 249 TP 304 is used in:

  • Boilers and Heat Exchangers: Resists high temperatures and corrosion in steam and water systems.
  • Food and Beverage: Hygienic tubing for processing liquids and solids.
  • Chemical Processing: Tubes for mild corrosives, similar to SA 240 GR 304 pipe.
  • Pharmaceuticals: Non-reactive, cleanable surfaces for sterile environments.

For high-temperature applications, consider sa 240 gr 304h plates or related tubing grades.

Comparison with Other Grades

  • Vs. SA 249 TP 304L: Lower carbon (≤0.035%) improves weldability, ideal for heavy welding applications.
  • Vs. SA 249 TP 316L: Similar properties, but 316L’s molybdenum (2-3%) enhances pitting resistance in chloride environments, at a higher SS 304 steel price.
  • Vs. SA 240 GR 304: Similar composition but SA 249 TP 304 is optimized for welded tubes, while SA 240 GR 304 is for plates like plat SS 304 3mm.

For harsher conditions, explore our sa 240 gr 317l or sa 240 gr 321.
