What is S420M Steel EN 10025-4 Hot Rolled Plate?

S420M steel is a thermomechanically rolled (TMCP) weldable fine-grain structural steel specified in EN 10025-4:2004 (current version 2019).

The designation “S420M” means:

• S= structural steel
• 420= minimum yield strength 420 MPa (transverse, thickness ≤ 16 mm)
• M= thermomechanical rolling (TMCP delivery condition – controlled hot rolling + accelerated cooling, no separate normalizing)

The TMCP process gives S420M superior properties compared to normalized grades:

• Higher strength-to-weight ratio
• Lower residual stress
• Better flatness and dimensional stability
• Excellent weldability (CEV ≤ 0.48)
• Better fatigue performance and HAZ toughness
