The Meaning of "L" in SA 240 GR 316L

In SA 240 GR 316L, the "L" stands for low carbon. This designation indicates that the stainless steel has a reduced carbon content (≤0.03%) compared to standard SA 240 GR 316 (≤0.08%). The low carbon content enhances weldability by minimizing the risk of carbide precipitation, which can lead to intergranular corrosion in welded areas. Like SA 240 GR 304L, the "L" in 316L ensures better performance in applications requiring welding, such as chemical tanks and marine equipment.

Gangsteel’s sa 240 gr 316l plates are certified to meet ASME SA 240 standards.

Why Low Carbon Matters

The low carbon in SA 240 GR 316L prevents "sensitization" during welding, where chromium carbides form at grain boundaries, depleting corrosion-resistant chromium. This makes 316L ideal for:

  • Welded Structures: Unlike SA 240 GR 304, which may require post-weld annealing, 316L maintains corrosion resistance without additional treatment.
  • Corrosive Environments: Its 2-3% molybdenum content enhances pitting resistance in chloride-rich settings, outperforming SA 240 GR 304L.

The SS 304 non magnetic properties are shared by 316L in its annealed state, with a SA 240 GR 316L density of 8.00 g/cm³, matching plat stainless 304. See our SS 304 data sheet for comparison.

Chemical Composition of SA 240 GR 316L

The chemical makeup of SA 240 GR 316L highlights the low carbon content:

  • Carbon (C): 0.00 - 0.03%
  • Chromium (Cr): 16.00 - 18.00%
  • Nickel (Ni): 10.00 - 14.00%
  • Molybdenum (Mo): 2.00 - 3.00%
  • Manganese (Mn): 0.00 - 2.00%
  • Silicon (Si): 0.00 - 0.75%
  • Phosphorus (P): 0.00 - 0.045%
  • Sulfur (S): 0.00 - 0.030%
  • Iron (Fe): Balance

This composition ensures superior corrosion resistance compared to SS204 vs SS 304 or SA 240 GR 304H material. For details, explore our sa 240 gr 316.

Mechanical Properties of SA 240 GR 316L

The low carbon slightly reduces strength compared to SA 240 GR 316 but enhances weldability:

Property

Value (Minimum)

Tensile Strength

485 MPa

Yield Strength (0.2% Offset)

170 MPa

Elongation (A5, 50 mm)

40%

Hardness (Brinell)

These properties suit applications like plat SS 304 3mm or thicker plates. For high-temperature needs, consider our sa 240 gr 304h.

Applications of SA 240 GR 316L

SA 240 GR 316L’s low carbon and molybdenum content make it ideal for:

  • Marine Environments: Resists pitting in saltwater, unlike SA 240 GR 304.
  • Chemical Processing: Handles acids and chlorides without tarnishing.
  • Medical Devices: Leverages SS 304 non magnetic-like properties.
  • Welded Piping: Used in SA 240 GR 304 pipe alternatives.
