How Much Nickel Is in 430 Stainless Steel?

Gangsteel is proud to be a direct exporter and authorized agent for Yongjin Stainless Steel (Yongjin Mill) — one of China's top-tier stainless steel producers. We specialize in supplying genuine, high-quality 430 stainless steel (AISI 430 / UNS S43000 / SUS430 / 1.4016 / X6Cr17) in coil, sheet and plate form to customers worldwide, and this question comes up almost daily: “How much nickel is in 430 stainless steel?”

The clear and accurate answer is:

430 stainless steel contains very little to no nickel — the maximum allowed is ≤ 0.75%, and in real production from top mills like Yongjin, the actual nickel content is typically 0.10–0.50% or even trace/undetectable.

Important:430 is intentionally designed as a nickel-free or ultra-low-nickel ferritic stainless steel. Nickel is deliberately kept as low as possible (often near zero) to achieve the following advantages:

  • Price stability— no exposure to LME nickel price swings (304/316 can fluctuate 30–60% in months)
  • 30–50% lower material costthan 304 or 316
  • Full magnetism— strong magnetic response (magnets stick firmly)
  • Better thermal conductivity— ≈26 W/m·K (≈60% higher than 304)
  • Lower thermal expansion— 10.5 × 10⁻⁶/°C (≈35% lower than 304)
  • Suitable for nickel-sensitive users— very low nickel reduces allergy risk

This is exactly why 430 remains the #1 choice for high-volume applications like home appliances, kitchenware, architectural trim, furniture, hardware, and automotive parts.

Real Nickel Content from Yongjin Mill

From recent mill test certificates we have exported:

  • Nickel: 0.18% – 0.42% (average ≈0.30%)
  • Many coils test <0.20% nickel — effectively “nickel-free” for practical purposes.

This low nickel level is one of the main reasons Yongjin 430 is so popular with global appliance giants, kitchen equipment makers, and architectural fabricators — stable cost + excellent performance in mild environments.

Why Low Nickel Makes 430 a Smart Choice

  • Cost savings: 30–50% less expensive than 304 — huge advantage for high-volume production
  • Price stability: No nickel = no wild price swings (304/316 prices can change 40% in months)
  • Magnetic benefit: Strong magnetism for magnetic knife holders, automated lines, sensor mounting
  • Thermal advantage: Better heat transfer and lower warping in cooking, appliances, heat exchangers
  • Food contact suitability: Very low nickel reduces allergy risk and meets many food-grade requirements

When 430 Is the Best Choice

  • Indoor / mild outdoor use
  • Appliances (refrigerators, washing machines, range hoods, microwaves)
  • Kitchenware (sinks, countertops, utensils)
  • Furniture & decorative hardware
  • Architectural trim & elevator interiors
  • Electrical enclosures & automotive trim

In these applications, 430 is not just “good” — it is often better than 304 because you get equal or superior performance in heat transfer and cost.

When to Choose 304 or 316 Instead

Only choose 304/316 if your application involves:

  • High chloride/salt exposure (coastal, marine, road salt)
  • Strong acids or aggressive sanitizers
  • Heavy food processing with brines or concentrated acids

In those cases we will honestly recommend 304/316 and supply them at competitive prices.
