430 Stainless Steel Rockwell Hardness

Gangsteel produces 430 stainless steel with consistent Rockwell hardness that fully complies with the leading international standards. We can manufacture to any of the following major specifications to meet your exact project requirements:

  • JIS G4305 SUS430(Japan)
  • ASTM A240 Type 430(USA)
  • EN 10088-2 1.4016 / X6Cr17(Europe)
  • DIN EN 1.4016(Germany)
  • GB/T 3280 10Cr17 / 1Cr17(China)
  • BS 1449 430S17(United Kingdom)
  • ISO 4954 X6Cr17(International)

Rockwell Hardness of 430 Stainless Steel

The Rockwell hardness of 430 stainless steel (AISI 430 or UNS S43000) in the standard annealed condition (the normal delivery state for cold-rolled sheet and coil) is:

Maximum Rockwell Hardness: ≤ 89 HRBTypical Range: 80 – 88 HRB

This value is the same across all major standards (ASTM A240, JIS G4305, EN 10088-2, GB/T 3280, etc.) and is measured on the Rockwell B scale using a 1/16" ball indenter and 100 kgf major load (ASTM E18 / ISO 6508).

Key Notes on Rockwell Hardness

  • The annealed condition gives the softest and most formable state (ideal for deep drawing and bending).
  • Cold working (temper rolling or skin-passing) can increase hardness to 95–100 HRB or higher, depending on the reduction.
  • Compared to austenitic grades like 304 (typically ≤92 HRB annealed), 430 is slightly softer in the annealed condition but offers better thermal conductivity and lower cost due to its nickel-free composition.
  • For applications requiring higher hardness, 430 can be supplied in lightly cold-worked tempers or (in special cases) heat-treated conditions.
