What is EN 10025-4 S355M Weldable Fine Grain Plate?

EN 10025-4 S355M is a thermomechanically rolled (TMCP) weldable fine grain structural steel with:

• Minimum yield strength 355 MPa
• Impact toughness ≥ 40 J at –20 °C (longitudinal)
• Very low CEV ≤ 0.39 → outstanding weldability (no preheat up to 80 mm)
• Fine grain structure (ASTM 8–11) from controlled microalloying (Nb, V, Ti)

The combination of weldable (low CEV, clean steel) and fine grain (microalloying + TMCP) makes S355M the perfect balance between high strength and easy fabrication when service temperature is above –20 °C.

S355M is the standard-temperature version of the most popular grade in the EN 10025-4 family. It is the direct TMCP alternative to normalized S355N (EN 10025-3) and the sister grade to the low-temperature bestseller S355ML (–50 °C).

Q1: What is the difference between S355M and S355ML?

A: The only difference is the impact test temperature. S355M is tested at –20 °C with minimum 40 J (longitudinal), while S355ML is tested at –50 °C with minimum 27 J. Yield strength, tensile strength, elongation, chemical composition, and weldability are exactly the same. Choose S355M when service temperature is above –20 °C; choose S355ML when below –20 °C.

Q2: Is preheating required when welding S355M?

A: No preheating is required up to 80 mm thickness thanks to the very low CEV (typically 0.34–0.37 actual). For thicknesses over 80 mm or highly restrained joints, a modest preheat of 75–100 °C is sufficient. This is a major advantage over many other structural steels.

Q3: Do you have Z35 quality in stock for S355M?
