S355M meaning in simple terms: A high-strength structural steel (355 MPa yield) delivered in thermomechanical rolled condition with normal low-temperature toughness (–20 °C).
It is the standard-temperature version of the very popular S355ML (–50 °C). When the lowest service temperature is above –20 °C, S355M is the cost-effective choice with identical strength and chemistry to S355ML.

S355M is widely used when the service temperature is above –20 °C:
When the temperature drops below –20 °C, the low-temperature version S355ML is required.
Q1: What does S355M mean exactly?
A: S = structural steel, 355 = minimum yield strength 355 MPa, M = thermomechanical rolling (TMCP delivery condition). No “L” means standard impact toughness at –20 °C (≥40 J). It is the standard-temperature version of the more common S355ML (–50 °C).
Q2: S355M vs S355ML difference?
A: Only the impact test temperature. S355M = –20 °C (≥40 J), S355ML = –50 °C (≥27 J). All other properties – yield, tensile, elongation, chemistry, weldability – are identical.
Q3: Is preheating required when welding S355M?
A: No preheating is required up to 80 mm thickness thanks to the very low CEV (typically 0.34–0.37 actual). For thicknesses over 80 mm or highly restrained joints, a modest preheat of 75–100 °C is sufficient.
Q4: Do you have Z35 quality in stock for S355M?
A: Yes – we keep very large stock of S355M + Z35 (reduction of area ≥35 % per EN 10164 Class 3), especially in 20–120 mm thickness, ready for immediate delivery.
Q5: What is the density and hardness of S355M?
A: Density is 7.85 g/cm³ (7850 kg/m³), hardness is 140–180 HBW (typical 150–170 HBW in our stock). These values are consistent across the entire thickness range.
Q6: What NDT do you provide as standard?
A: 100 % ultrasonic testing to EN 10160 S2/E2 is included with every plate. We can upgrade to S3/E3, magnetic particle (MT), or penetrant testing (PT) on request at no extra charge for reasonable quantities.
