What is S275M Chemical Composition EN 10025-4?

S275M is a thermomechanically rolled (TMCP) weldable fine-grain structural steel specified in EN 10025-4:2004 (current version 2019).

The chemical composition of S275M is carefully controlled to deliver:

  • High strength (275 MPa minimum yield)
  • Excellent weldability (CEV ≤ 0.38)
  • Fine grain structure for superior toughness and fatigue resistance

The low carbon and tightly controlled alloying elements, combined with the TMCP process, are what make S275M one of the most weldable and reliable entry-level high-strength structural steels available.

Applications of S275M Fine Grain Material

S275M is widely used when the service temperature is above –20 °C:

  • Light structural frames
  • Onshore wind turbine towers
  • Heavy machinery bases
  • Bridge components
  • General fabrication

When the temperature drops below –20 °C, the low-temperature version S275ML is required.

FAQ – Detailed Answers

Q1: What is the typical CEV of your S275M plates?

A: Our actual CEV is 0.32–0.36, significantly lower than the maximum 0.38 allowed by the standard. This gives outstanding weldability – no preheating required up to 100 mm thickness in most conditions.

Q2: Why is the carbon content so low in S275M?

A: Low carbon (0.09–0.12 % actual) is essential for the TMCP process and excellent HAZ toughness after welding. It also contributes to the very low CEV and high impact values.

Q3: How do you control P and S levels?

A: We use vacuum degassing (VD) and strict raw material selection to keep P+S ≤0.030 % (often ≤0.025 %). This ensures clean steel with minimal inclusions and maximum toughness.

Q4: Can you supply S275M with even tighter chemistry?

A: Yes – for special offshore or pressure vessel applications, we can offer P+S ≤0.020 %, C ≤0.10 %, or other restrictions by agreement.

Q5: Do you provide chemical composition certificates?

A: Every plate is supplied with EN 10204-3.1 or 3.2 certificate showing complete ladle and product analysis for the specific heat number.

Q6: What is the difference between S275M and S275ML chemistry?

A: The chemical composition is exactly the same. The only difference is the impact test temperature (S275M –20 °C, S275ML –50 °C).

Q7: How fast can you deliver with full chemical certificates?

A: From ready stock: 3–7 days worldwide, including all certificates and third-party inspection reports.
