Does 430 stainless steel contain nickel?

No — 430 stainless steel contains very little to no nickel.

The standard chemical composition of AISI 430 / Type 430 / UNS S43000 / SUS430 / 1.4016 / X6Cr17 is:

Element

Content (wt%)

Notes

Carbon (C)

≤ 0.12

Low to minimize carbide formation

Chromium (Cr)

16.00 – 18.00

Main alloying element for corrosion resistance

Manganese (Mn)

≤ 1.00

Standard deoxidizer

Silicon (Si)

≤ 1.00

Improves oxidation resistance

Phosphorus (P)

≤ 0.040

Controlled impurity

Sulfur (S)

≤ 0.030

Controlled impurity

Nickel (Ni)

≤ 0.75(usually <0.50 or trace)

Intentionally kept very low or zero

Iron (Fe)

Key Points About Nickel in 430

  • Maximum allowed: ≤ 0.75% (per ASTM A240, JIS G4305, EN 10088-2, GB/T 3280, etc.)
  • Actual content in most production: 0.10–0.50% or even trace/undetectable — many mills (including Yongjin) target near-zero nickel to keep costs low and stable.
  • Purpose: 430 is deliberately formulated as a nickel-free or very low-nickel ferritic stainless steel. Nickel is expensive and causes price volatility, so it is intentionally minimized.

Why This Matters

  • Price stability— 430 does not fluctuate with nickel market prices (unlike 304, 316, 201, etc.).
  • Cost advantage— 30–50% cheaper than 304 on average.
  • Magnetic properties— very low nickel keeps the structure fully ferritic and strongly magnetic.
  • Food contact & allergies— extremely low nickel makes it suitable for nickel-sensitive users and many food-grade applications.

Bottom line: 430 is intentionally designed to be nickel-free or very low-nickel — that is one of its biggest advantages.
