What is 430 stainless steel made of?

430 stainless steelis a ferritic stainless steel primarily made of iron alloyed with chromium as the main element, and very little or no nickel. It is one of the most common and cost-effective grades in the 400 series.

Here is the exact, standard chemical composition of AISI 430 / Type 430 / UNS S43000 / SUS 430 / EN 1.4016:

Element

Content (wt%)

Purpose / Role

Iron (Fe)

Balance (~80–84%)

Base metal

Chromium (Cr)

16.00 – 18.00%

Main alloying element — forms protective passive oxide layer for corrosion resistance

Carbon (C)

≤ 0.12%

Low to minimize carbide formation and improve weldability

Manganese (Mn)

≤ 1.00%

Deoxidizer and strengthener

Silicon (Si)

≤ 1.00%

Improves oxidation resistance and fluidity

Phosphorus (P)

≤ 0.040%

Controlled impurity (harmful in excess)

Sulfur (S)

≤ 0.030%

Controlled impurity (harmful in excess)

Nickel (Ni)

≤ 0.75%(usually < 0.50% or trace)

Intentionally kept very low or zero — no nickel is added on purpose

Other elements

Trace amounts (Cu, N, etc.)

Minimal or none

Important:430 is deliberately formulated as a nickel-free (or ultra-low-nickel) stainless steel. Nickel is expensive and causes price volatility, so it is minimized to keep 430 affordable and stable in price compared to nickel-bearing grades like 304 (8–10.5% Ni) or 316 (10–14% Ni).

Why This Composition Makes 430 Special

  • High chromium→ good rust resistance in mild environments (urban air, fresh water, mild acids)
  • No nickel→ very stable and lower cost
  • Low carbon→ reduces risk of carbide precipitation during welding
  • Ferritic structure→ strong magnetism, high thermal conductivity (≈26 W/m·K), low thermal expansion (10.5 × 10⁻⁶/°C)

Common Real-World Uses (Where This Composition Shines)

  • Refrigerator doors and liners
  • Range hoods and oven panels
  • Kitchen sinks and countertops
  • Washing machine drums and panels
  • Elevator interiors and architectural trim
  • Automotive interior trim
  • Furniture hardware and decorative parts

In all these applications, the low nickel + high chromium formula gives reliable performance at a much lower price than 304.

Bottom Line

430 stainless steel is made mostly of iron + 16–18% chromium, with very little or no nickel intentionally added. That simple composition is exactly why it is:

  • Affordable and price-stable
  • Strongly magnetic
  • Excellent at heat transfer
  • Good rust resistance in mild conditions
  • Perfect for high-volume, everyday products like appliances, kitchenware, trim, and cladding
