  • JIS G4305 SUS430(Japan)
  • ASTM A240 Type 430(USA)
  • EN 10088-2 1.4016 / X6Cr17(Europe)
  • DIN EN 1.4016(Germany)
  • GB/T 3280 10Cr17 / 1Cr17(China)
  • BS 1449 430S17(United Kingdom)
  • ISO 4954 X6Cr17(International)

As a direct Yongjin 430 agent, Gangsteel supplies genuine China Yongjin 430 BA/2B material that is widely used in welded fabrications worldwide.

What Is 430 Stainless Steel Coil Weldability?

430 stainless steel coil is a nickel-free ferritic grade (16–18% Cr) known for its good overall weldability when proper techniques are applied. Unlike austenitic grades such as 304, 430 does not suffer from hot cracking, but it has specific considerations due to its ferritic structure:

  • Risk of grain growth in the heat-affected zone (HAZ) if heat input is too high
  • Potential sensitization (intergranular corrosion) in the HAZ if not properly managed
  • Excellent resistance to distortion thanks to low thermal expansion

With correct welding parameters, filler metals, and post-weld treatment, 430 cold rolled stainless steel coil can be reliably welded for a wide range of applications including appliances, automotive parts, architectural components, and industrial equipment.

Chemical Composition

Our 430 coils strictly conform to the chemical limits of all listed standards:

Element

Content (wt%)

Carbon (C)

≤0.12

Chromium (Cr)

16.00–18.00

Manganese (Mn)

≤1.00

Silicon (Si)

≤1.00

Phosphorus (P)

≤0.040

Sulfur (S)

≤0.030

Nickel (Ni)

≤0.75

Low carbon and controlled impurities help minimize sensitization risk during welding.

Detailed Weldability of 430 Stainless Steel Coil

430 is considered to have good weldability among ferritic stainless steels, but it requires attention to a few key factors:

1. Heat Input Control

  • Use low to moderate heat input to avoid excessive grain growth in the HAZ, which can reduce toughness.
  • Recommended: TIG (GTAW) or MIG (GMAW) with pulsed current for thin coils (≤1.5 mm).
  • Avoid high-heat processes like SMAW on thin material.

2. Filler Metal Selection

  • Matching filler: ER430 or E430
  • More common and recommended: Austenitic fillers such as ER308L or ER309L — these improve ductility and reduce cracking risk in the weld metal.
  • For best corrosion resistance in the weld zone, use ER316L when the application involves mild acids or chlorides.

3. Preheating and Interpass Temperature

  • Thin coils (<1.5 mm): Usually no preheat required.
  • Thicker coils (>2.0 mm): Preheat to 150–200 °C to reduce cracking risk.
  • Keep interpass temperature below 200 °C.

4. Post-Weld Heat Treatment (PWHT)

  • Highly recommended for maximum corrosion resistance: Anneal at 790–815 °C for 30–60 minutes followed by rapid cooling.
  • This restores the passive layer in the HAZ and prevents intergranular corrosion.

5. Common Welding Issues & Solutions

  • Sensitization (intergranular corrosion): Prevented by low heat input + PWHT.
  • Grain coarsening: Controlled by fast welding speed and low heat.
  • Embrittlement: Avoid prolonged exposure in the 400–500 °C range during welding.

With proper procedure, 430 cold rolled stainless steel coil achieves weld strength close to the base metal and maintains good corrosion resistance after annealing.
