Material S355ML is a thermomechanically rolled (TMCP) weldable fine grain structural steel specified in EN 10025-4:2004 (current version 2019).
The "fine grain" designation is critical: the TMCP process combined with microalloying (Nb, V, Ti) produces a very fine-grained microstructure (ASTM grain size 8–11), which is the key to S355ML's excellent combination of high strength, superior low-temperature toughness, and outstanding weldability.

The fine grain structure is what sets S355ML apart from conventional hot-rolled grades like S355J2. It provides better resistance to brittle fracture, better weldability, and higher fatigue life – making it the preferred material for offshore wind towers, Arctic structures, jack-up rigs, and heavy cranes where safety margins in cold conditions are non-negotiable.
