Overview of S355ML vs IS 2062 E350

S355ML, defined in EN 10025-4, is a thermomechanically rolled, high-strength structural steel known for:

  • 355 MPa minimum yield strength
  • Excellent toughness at low temperatures (–50°C)
  • Very good weldability due to low CE

It is widely used in offshore engineering, bridges, heavy machinery, and low-temperature structures.

In the Indian standard IS 2062, the closest equivalent strength grade is E350, a structural steel with a similar yield strength level. However, E350 does not include mandatory low-temperature toughness requirements, so it is only a partial equivalent to S355ML.

  • S355ML performs much better at –20°C / –40°C / –50°C.

Are S355ML and IS 2062 E350 Interchangeable?

Partially interchangeable, depending on the service conditions.

When Equivalent

Use IS 2062 E350 instead of S355ML if:

  • The project is not in a low-temperature environment
  • Toughness requirements are moderate
  • Strength level ~350 MPa is applicable

Not Equivalent

Do NOT substitute IS 2062 E350 for S355ML when:

  • –20°C / –40°C / –50°C impact tests are required
  • Offshore structures
  • High-altitude or cold regions
  • Low-temperature machinery
  • Cryogenic or LNG-related structures

In these cases, only S355ML is correct.
