S355ML Equivalent JIS SM490A | EN 10025-4 Steel Plate

Overview of S355ML and Its Japanese Equivalent SM490A

S355MLis a thermomechanically rolled, low-temperature, high-strength structural steel specified in EN 10025-4. It offers a minimum yield strength of 355 MPa and excellent toughness at low temperatures (–50°C typical), making it suitable for offshore, bridges, heavy machinery, and welded structures.

In the Japanese JIS G3106 standard, the closest comparable grade is SM490A, a weldable structural steel used for bridges, marine structures, and building frameworks.
Although SM490A is not fully identical to S355ML, engineers often treat them as practical equivalents in strength-level and application range.

Summary:

  • S355ML has stricter P+S limits.
  • S355ML uses TMCP and micro-alloying, giving better weldability and toughness.
  • SM490A has slightly higher carbon and no mandatory low-temperature requirements.

Summary:

  • S355ML has superior low-temperature impact toughness.
  • SM490A is suitable for general structural use but does not require low-temperature toughness testing.
  • Strength levels are broadly similar, although S355ML is more reliable in extreme cold environments.

Application Comparison

Both grades are used in structural engineering, but S355ML is preferred for low-temperature service:

S355ML Typical Applications

  • Offshore platforms
  • LNG and low-temperature equipment
  • Bridges
  • High-rise structures
  • Wind towers
  • Heavy machinery
  • Crane booms

SM490A Typical Applications

  • Building structures
  • Bridges
  • General welded construction
  • Marine structures
  • Machinery parts

Are S355ML and SM490A Interchangeable?

Partially.

They are often considered equivalent when:

  • The project requires ~355 MPa yield strength
  • The environment is normal temperature
  • Toughness requirements are moderate
  • Plate thickness is within typical structural ranges

However, SM490A does not meet low-temperature impact requirements.
For cold regions, offshore structures, or –20°C / –40°C / –50°C service, S355ML is the correct material.
