What is S355ML NL EN 10025-4 Weldable Plate?

S355ML (EN 10025-4) and S355NL (EN 10025-3) are twin grades with identical chemical composition and mechanical properties, both delivering 355 MPa minimum yield strength and ≥27 J impact toughness at –50 °C. The key difference is delivery condition:

  • S355ML= Thermomechanically rolled (TMCP) – the modern, preferred method
  • S355NL= Normalized or normalized rolled – the traditional method

Both are highly weldable low-temperature structural steels, but S355ML's TMCP process provides superior weldability characteristics due to lower residual stresses, finer grain structure, and better HAZ (heat-affected zone) toughness.

The outstanding weldability of S355ML/NL comes from:

  • Very low CEV ≤0.39 (typical actual 0.34–0.37)
  • Low carbon content (max 0.14 %, typical 0.10–0.12 %)
  • Controlled P+S ≤0.035 % (typical ≤0.030 %)
  • Fine grain structure from Al + Nb + V + Ti microalloying

This combination allows welding without preheating up to 80 mm thickness, even with high heat input processes like SAW (submerged arc welding). Preheating is only required for very thick plates or highly restrained joints, and even then only 75–100 °C maximum.

Weldability Advantages of S355ML/NL

Both grades have excellent weldability, but S355ML TMCP has clear advantages:

  • Lower residual stress → less distortion
  • Finer HAZ grain → higher toughness in weld zone
  • No preheating up to 80 mm (even 100 mm in practice)
  • Suitable for all welding processes: SMAW, SAW, FCAW, GMAW
  • Low hydrogen cracking risk (CTOD >0.4 mm typical at –40 °C)
