What is Stal S355ML EN 10025-4 Polish Steel Plate?

Stal S355ML refers to the Polish designation for S355ML structural steel under EN 10025-4:2004 (2019 revision), a thermomechanically rolled (TMCP) weldable fine-grain plate optimized for high-strength, low-temperature applications. In Poland, "stal S355ML" is widely used in heavy industry, shipbuilding, and renewable energy, where its 355 MPa minimum yield strength and ≥27 J Charpy V-notch at –50 °C ensure safety in harsh Baltic winters.

The grade breakdown:

  • S= structural steel for load-bearing
  • 355= nominal yield 355 MPa (≤16 mm thick)
  • M= thermomechanical rolling (TMCP process)
  • L= low-temperature impact (–50 °C test)

TMCP involves hot rolling at 900-1100 °C with controlled cooling (20-40 °C/s), creating a fine ferrite-bainite microstructure without post-rolling heat treatment. This yields CEV ≤0.39 for preheat-free welding up to 80 mm, finer grains (ASTM 8-10) for ductility (≥22% elongation), and isotropy superior to normalized S355NL (EN 10025-3). In Poland, stal S355ML complies with PN-EN 10025-4 and Eurocode 3, mandatory for offshore like PGE's Baltic projects or Orlen's platforms.

Vs. S355J2 (EN 10025-2), S355ML offers 15-20% weight reduction via thinner sections, cutting costs in Gdansk shipyards. Z-testing (Z25/Z35 EN 10164) prevents lamellar tearing in welds. Gangsteel supplies stal S355ML with Polish-language MTCs on request. For designation insights, see S355ML Meaning EN 10025-4 Structural Steel Supplier.
