Verdict from 15+ years experience: S355ML (TMCP) is the superior choice for 90 % of modern projects due to lower residual stress, better flatness, superior HAZ properties, and easier fabrication. The small price premium is quickly recovered through reduced welding time, lower preheat requirements, and higher productivity.

S355NL (normalized) is still preferred when the specification explicitly requires normalizing or when the fabricator has traditional normalizing equipment for very thick plates (>150 mm) in controlled shop conditions.

Both grades have excellent weldability (CEV ≤0.39 actual), but S355ML's TMCP delivery provides:
