ABS EH40 Steel Plate – Properties, Chemistry & Equivalents

ABS EH40 (also written AB/EH40, ABS Grade EH40, EH40 steel plate) is a higher-strength hull structural steel. In the grade name, the letter E is the toughness grade (impact test at -40°C) and 40 denotes the strength level with a minimum yield strength of 390 MPa.
Gangsteel is specialized in supplying ABS high strength steel plate in ABS Grade EH40. For more information of GradeEH40 steel plate, please check them in following:

Al, Nb and V minima apply when used singly (combined minima per ABS 2-1-3/5); Si min does not apply where acid-soluble Al ≥ 0.015%; AH ≤ 12.5 mm may have Mn min 0.70%. Product analysis = heat limit ± ASTM A6/A6M Table A permitted variation (band chosen by the specified maximum/upper limit); applies only when product (check) analysis is required; for a range, results may not vary both above and below it. Per ABS Rules for Materials and Welding Part 2 (2022); product analysis tolerances per ABS 2-1-2/5.3 (“chemical tolerances of ASTM A6”) and ASTM A6/A6M 7.2, Table A (also invoked by ASTM A131). Heat limits: ABS 2-1-3/7.3 Table 1 (t ≤ 150 mm).
Crack Sensitivity: Pcm = (C+Si/30+Mn/20+Cu/20+Ni/60+Cr/20+Mo/15+V/10+5B)%
Carbon Equivalent: Ceq = 【C+Mn/6+(Cr+Mo+V)/5+(Ni+Cu)/15】%

FAQ
What does EH40 mean in ABS steel?
'E' is the toughness grade (impact test at -40°C) and '40' denotes the strength level with a minimum yield strength of 390 MPa.
What are the mechanical properties of ABS EH40?
Minimum yield 390 MPa, tensile strength 510-650 MPa; Charpy V impact average ≥39 J longitudinal / 26 J transverse at -40°C for t≤50 mm.
What is the impact test temperature of ABS EH40?
-40°C.
What is ABS EH40 equivalent to?
ASTM A131 EH40, and grade EH40 (DNV: VL EH40) of other IACS member societies such as LR, BV and CCS, as all follow IACS UR W11. The class certificate must match the project's classification society.
What is the chemical composition of ABS EH40?
C ≤0.18%, Mn 0.90-1.60%, Si 0.10-0.50%, P and S ≤0.035%, with Nb/V/Ti grain refiners; see the table above.
