What is S355ML Material EN 10025-4 Structural Steel?

S355ML is a thermomechanically rolled (TMCP) weldable fine-grain structural steel specified in EN 10025-4:2004 (current version 2019).

The designation breaks down as:

  • S= structural steel
  • 355= minimum yield strength 355 MPa (for thickness ≤ 16 mm)
  • M= thermomechanical rolling (TMCP)
  • L= improved low-temperature toughness (impact test at –50 °C)

S355ML material is specifically designed for high-strength applications where excellent toughness at low temperatures is required. The TMCP process – controlled hot rolling followed by accelerated cooling – produces a very fine-grained microstructure without separate normalizing heat treatment. This gives S355ML superior combination of strength, ductility, weldability, and low-temperature performance compared to conventional hot-rolled or normalized grades.

S355ML is the low-temperature version of S355M and the TMCP version of S355NL. It is the most popular grade in the entire EN 10025-4 standard because it offers the perfect balance between cost, strength, and –50 °C impact toughness.
