What is S460M Material EN 10025-4 Fine Grain Steel?

S460M material is a thermomechanically rolled (TMCP) weldable fine grain structural steel specified in EN 10025-4:2004 (current version 2019).

The designation “S460M” means:

• S= structural steel
• 460= minimum yield strength 460 MPa (transverse, thickness ≤ 16 mm)
• M= thermomechanical rolling (TMCP delivery condition)

The fine grain structure is achieved through controlled microalloying (Nb, V, Ti) and the TMCP process, resulting in ASTM grain size 8–11. This is what gives S460M its excellent combination of very high strength, superior weldability, and good low-temperature toughness (≥40 J at –20 °C).

S460M is the highest-strength standard-temperature grade in the EN 10025-4 family. It is the direct TMCP alternative to normalized S460N (EN 10025-3) and the sister grade to the low-temperature bestseller S460ML (–50 °C).
