What is S460M+Z35 EN 10025-4 Z35 Through-Thickness Plate?

S460M+Z35is a thermomechanically rolled (TMCP) weldable fine-grain structural steel under EN 10025-4:2004 (2019 revision) with additional Z35 through-thickness quality per EN 10164 Class 3.

• S460M= structural steel, 460 MPa yield, TMCP delivery, standard –20 °C impact
• +Z35= guaranteed through-thickness ductility: minimum 35 % reduction of area (RA_z) in Z-direction tensile test (three specimens per heat, average ≥35 %, single ≥25 %)

Z35 quality prevents lamellar tearing in highly stressed welded joints where tension acts perpendicular to the plate surface (T-joints, cruciform welds, gusset plates, etc.).

S460M+Z35 is the preferred grade for:

Q1: What is the difference between S460M and S460ML?

A: The only difference is the impact test temperature. S460M is tested at –20 °C with minimum 40 J (longitudinal), while S460ML is tested at –50 °C with minimum 27 J. Yield strength, tensile strength, elongation, chemical composition, and weldability are exactly the same.

Q2: Is preheating required when welding S460M?

A: No preheating is required up to 80 mm thickness thanks to the very low CEV (typically 0.42–0.46 actual). For thicknesses over 80 mm or highly restrained joints, a modest preheat of 75–100 °C is sufficient.

Q3: Do you have Z35 quality in stock for S460M?

A: Yes – we keep very large stock of S460M + Z35 (reduction of area ≥35 % per EN 10164 Class 3), especially in 20–150 mm thickness, ready for immediate delivery.

Q4: What is the density and hardness of S460M?
