Verdict from 15+ years experience: S460M (TMCP) is the clear winner for 90 % of modern projects due to lower residual stress, better flatness, superior HAZ properties, and easier fabrication. The small price premium is quickly recovered through reduced welding time, lower preheat requirements, and higher productivity.
S460N (normalized) is still chosen when the specification explicitly requires normalizing or when the fabricator has traditional normalizing equipment for very thick plates (>150 mm) in controlled shop conditions.
Gangsteel produces both grades with identical chemistry and properties – you get the same high quality regardless of delivery condition.

The extra cost of S460M is easily justified by the lower production cost and superior fabrication properties.
Q1: S460M vs S460N – which is better for offshore wind?
A: S460M (TMCP) is now the preferred choice for offshore wind due to lower residual stress, better flatness, and superior HAZ toughness. Most new offshore wind projects specify S460M.
Q2: Are the mechanical properties identical?
A: Yes – yield strength, tensile strength, elongation, hardness, density, and impact toughness are exactly the same. The difference is only in the manufacturing process and resulting fabrication behaviour.
Q3: Price difference today?
A: S460M is approximately 60–100 USD/ton higher than S460N (November 2025 market), but the fabrication advantages usually make it the better value.
Q4: Can I use S460M instead of S460N?
A: Yes – S460M is the modern TMCP replacement for normalized S460N with better properties. Most engineers now specify S460M as standard.
