S460N vs S460M – The Complete Technical Comparison

S460N and S460M are twin grades with identical nominal strength (460 MPa yield) and identical chemistry, but differ in delivery condition and manufacturing process.

Verdict from 15+ years experience: S460M (TMCP) is the clear winner for 90 % of modern projects due to lower residual stress, better flatness, superior HAZ properties, and easier fabrication. The small price premium is quickly recovered through reduced welding time, lower preheat requirements, and higher productivity.

S460N (normalized) is still chosen when the specification explicitly requires normalizing or when the fabricator has traditional normalizing equipment for very thick plates (>150 mm) in controlled shop conditions.
