What is Steel S460M EN 10025-4 High Strength Plate?

Steel S460M is a thermomechanically rolled (TMCP) weldable fine-grain high-strength structural steel specified in EN 10025-4:2004 (current version 2019).

The designation “S460M” means:

• S= structural steel
• 460= minimum yield strength 460 MPa (transverse, thickness ≤ 16 mm)
• M= thermomechanical rolling (TMCP delivery condition)

The TMCP process – controlled hot rolling + accelerated cooling – produces a very fine-grained microstructure without separate normalizing heat treatment. This gives steel S460M:

• Higher strength-to-weight ratio than standard grades
• Lower residual stress
• Better flatness and dimensional stability
• Excellent weldability (CEV ≤ 0.48)
