430 Stainless Steel Corrosion Resistance

Gangsteel produces 430 stainless steel with reliable corrosion resistance that fully complies with the leading international standards. We can manufacture to any of the following major specifications:

  • JIS G4305 SUS430(Japan)
  • ASTM A240 Type 430(USA)
  • EN 10088-2 1.4016 / X6Cr17(Europe)
  • DIN EN 1.4016(Germany)
  • GB/T 3280 10Cr17 / 1Cr17(China)
  • BS 1449 430S17(United Kingdom)
  • ISO 4954 X6Cr17(International)

Corrosion Resistance Overview

430 stainless steel is a nickel-free ferritic grade with 16–18% chromium. This chromium content forms a stable passive oxide layer that provides good atmospheric corrosion resistance and protection in fresh water and mild chemical environments. It performs significantly better than carbon steel and is often chosen for its cost-effectiveness.

Key strengths:

  • Excellent resistance to rural and urban atmospheres
  • Good performance in fresh water and steam
  • Strong oxidation and scaling resistance up to 815 °C (intermittent) and 760 °C (continuous)
  • Resistant to nitric acid and many organic acids

Limitations:

  • Susceptible to pitting and crevice corrosion in chloride-containing environments (salt water, de-icing salts, coastal air)
  • Not recommended for strong acids or alkaline solutions
  • Can suffer intergranular corrosion in the heat-affected zone after welding unless properly annealed

Comparison with Other Grades

  • vs 304: 430 has lower corrosion resistance in chlorides and acids but much better thermal conductivity and lower cost.
  • vs 409: 430 offers better general atmospheric resistance; 409 is preferred for high-temperature exhaust applications.
  • vs 316: 430 is far less resistant to pitting in marine or chloride environments.

For critical applications, we recommend our a240 Type_430 stainless steel sheet or EN10088 2 X6Cr17 stainless steel sheet.

Welding and Corrosion

430 can be welded, but the heat-affected zone may become sensitized. Post-weld annealing at 790–815 °C restores full corrosion resistance. Our DIN 1.4016 stainless steel sheet and GB/T 10Cr17 1Cr17 stainless steel sheet are supplied in the annealed condition to minimize sensitization risk.
