430 Stainless Steel Thermal Expansion Coefficient

Gangsteel produces 430 stainless steel with consistent thermal expansion coefficient values that fully comply with the leading international standards. We can manufacture to any of the following major specifications to meet your exact project requirements:

  • JIS G4305 SUS430(Japan)
  • ASTM A240 Type 430(USA)
  • EN 10088-2 1.4016 / X6Cr17(Europe)
  • DIN EN 1.4016(Germany)
  • GB/T 3280 10Cr17 / 1Cr17(China)
  • BS 1449 430S17(United Kingdom)
  • ISO 4954 X6Cr17(International)

Thermal Expansion Coefficient of 430 Stainless Steel

430 stainless steel (AISI 430 / UNS S43000) is a ferritic grade with a low coefficient of thermal expansion, making it excellent for applications where dimensional stability under temperature changes is critical.

The mean coefficient of thermal expansion is as follows:

Temperature Range

Mean Coefficient of Thermal Expansion (×10⁻⁶/°C)

20 – 100 °C

10.5

20 – 200 °C

10.8

20 – 300 °C

11.0

20 – 400 °C

11.3

20 – 500 °C

11.5

20 – 600 °C

11.7

These values are typical and consistent across all major standards (ASTM A240, JIS G4305, EN 10088-2, GB/T 3280, etc.).

Key Advantages of Low Thermal Expansion

  • Minimizes distortion and warping in heat exchangers, radiant tubes, and appliance components
  • Reduces stress during thermal cycling compared to austenitic grades (304 has ~16–17 × 10⁻⁶/°C)
  • Combined with high thermal conductivity (~26 W/m·K), it provides excellent thermal management performance

Comparison with Other Grades

  • 430 vs 304: 430 has ~35% lower thermal expansion, making it preferred for parts that must stay dimensionally stable when heated.
  • 430 vs Carbon Steel: Similar expansion but far superior corrosion and oxidation resistance.
