430 vs 201 Cold Rolled Stainless Steel Coil

Gangsteel produces both 430 and 201 cold rolled stainless steel coil in full compliance with the leading international standards. We can manufacture to any of the following major specifications to meet your exact project requirements:

  • JIS G4305 SUS430 / SUS201(Japan)
  • ASTM A240 Type 430 / Type 201(USA)
  • EN 10088-2 1.4016 / 1.4372(Europe)
  • DIN EN 1.4016 / 1.4372(Germany)
  • GB/T 3280 10Cr17 / 1Cr17Mn6Ni5N(China)

Whether you need 430, 201, or both for side-by-side comparison, Gangsteel delivers consistent quality, full traceability, and competitive pricing from our advanced Chinese production facilities.

430 vs 201 Cold Rolled Stainless Steel Coil: Quick Overview

Both grades are popular, cost-effective stainless steels in coil form, but they belong to different families:

  • 430is a nickel-free ferritic grade: magnetic, excellent thermal conductivity, stable pricing, good for mild environments.
  • 201is a manganese-substituted austenitic grade: non-magnetic, higher strength and work-hardening, better formability, slightly higher cost than 430 but much cheaper than 304.

The 2B or BA finish is most common for both, making them ideal for stamping, bending, and high-volume production.

Corrosion Resistance

  • 430: Good in rural/urban atmospheres, fresh water, and mild acids. Susceptible to pitting in chlorides.
  • 201: Better general corrosion resistance than 430 in many mild environments due to its austenitic structure, but still not as good as 304 in chlorides or acids.

For mild indoor use, both work well; 201 edges out in slightly more aggressive conditions.

Thermal Properties

430 has a clear advantage:

  • Thermal conductivity: ≈26 W/m·K (430) vs ≈16 W/m·K (201)
  • Thermal expansion: 10.5 × 10⁻⁶/°C(430) vs 17 × 10⁻⁶/°C(201)

430 is preferred for heat exchangers and parts that must stay dimensionally stable when heated.

Weldability and Fabrication

  • 430: Good weldability but may require post-weld annealing.
  • 201: Excellent weldability, non-magnetic, and highly formable.

Both grades are easy to fabricate in 2B or BA finish.

Cost and Availability

430 is typically 20–35% cheaper than 201 due to zero nickel. Pricing for both is more stable than 304. Both are readily available from Gangsteel in coil and sheet form.

Applications: When to Choose Each

Choose 430 when you need:

  • Lower cost
  • Magnetic properties
  • High thermal conductivity
  • Mild corrosion environments (appliances, trim)

Choose 201 when you need:

  • Higher strength and better deep-draw formability
  • Non-magnetic properties
  • Slightly better corrosion resistance than 430 at still low cost
