What is Material S460ML EN 10025-4 Fine Grain Steel?

Material S460ML is a thermomechanically rolled (TMCP) weldable fine grain structural steel specified in EN 10025-4:2004 (current version 2019).

The designation “S460ML” means:

• S= structural steel
• 460= minimum yield strength 460 MPa (transverse, thickness ≤ 16 mm)
• M= thermomechanical rolling (TMCP delivery condition)
• L= low-temperature impact toughness (–50 °C test)

The fine grain structure is achieved through controlled microalloying (Nb, V, Ti) and the TMCP process, resulting in ASTM grain size 8–11. This is what gives S460ML its excellent combination of very high strength, superior low-temperature toughness, and outstanding weldability.

S460ML is the highest-strength low-temperature grade in the EN 10025-4 family that still offers excellent weldability and formability. It is the material of choice when maximum strength-to-weight ratio and –50 °C performance are required.

A: The combination of low carbon, Al + Nb + V + Ti microalloying, and TMCP process produces ASTM grain size 8–11, which is the definition of "fine grain" and the reason for its superior toughness and weldability.

A: The only difference is the impact test temperature. S460ML is tested at –50 °C with minimum 27 J (longitudinal), while S460M is tested at –20 °C with minimum 40 J. Yield strength, tensile strength, elongation, chemical composition, and weldability are exactly the same.

Q3: Is preheating required when welding S460ML?

A: No preheating is required up to 80 mm thickness thanks to the very low CEV (typically 0.42–0.46 actual). For thicknesses over 80 mm or highly restrained joints, a modest preheat of 75–100 °C is sufficient.
