What is S460ML Steel EN 10025-4 Hot Rolled Plate?

S460ML steel is a thermomechanically rolled (TMCP) weldable fine-grain structural steel specified in EN 10025-4:2004 (current version 2019), engineered for maximum strength and low-temperature performance.

The designation “S460ML” means:

• S= structural steel
• 460= minimum yield strength 460 MPa (transverse, thickness ≤ 16 mm)
• M= thermomechanical rolling (TMCP delivery condition)
• L= low-temperature impact toughness (–50 °C test)

The TMCP process – controlled hot rolling + accelerated cooling – produces a very fine-grained microstructure without separate normalizing heat treatment. This gives S460ML:

• Higher strength-to-weight ratio than standard grades
• Excellent low-temperature toughness ≥ 27 J at –50 °C (longitudinal)
• Superior weldability (CEV ≤ 0.48)
• Better fatigue performance and HAZ toughness

S460ML is the highest-strength low-temperature grade in the EN 10025-4 family that still offers excellent weldability and formability. It is the material of choice when maximum strength-to-weight ratio and –50 °C performance are required.
